Call me a nerd, but for the past week I have been eagerly anticipating this morning for the simple fact that the ALA announced their literary awards. First thing I did when I woke up was check the ALA press releases. I think this is the first year that I have actually already read both the Caldecott and Newbery Medalists. The Caldecott went to Brian Selznick's The Invention of Hugo Cabret I hadn't actually considered it for the Caldecott--I was more thinking a Newbery Honor, but when I look at it now, I think it's perfect. The Newbery went to Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! a book of short dramatic skits about the Middle Ages which I reviewed for the CBPR a few months ago.
So both the Caldecott and Newbery awards go to unusual titles. I think this might be the first dramatic publication to win the Newbery and Hugo Cabret is definitely the longest Caldecott medalist ever.
As for the other awards announced this morning most of the titles were unfamiliar. The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain by Peter Sis looks interesting and it received both a Caldecott Honor and the Sibert Medal (awarded to the best non-fiction material for children).
Take a look at the ALA's press release to see what else won.
